The Power of a Handwritten Note: Staying Connected in a Remote World
One of my favorite ways to keep connected with my remote team is by sending personalized, handwritten cards. In a world dominated by digital communication, there’s something uniquely special about receiving a tangible, heartfelt note in the mail. It’s a simple yet powerful way to remind my team members that they are valued and appreciated, even from miles away.
Every winter holiday season, I send out a batch of cards to my entire team, and each year on their work anniversary, I make sure to celebrate them with a personal note. I take the time to handwrite each card, crafting 3-4 sentences that are specific to the individual. Whether it’s recognizing their achievements, expressing gratitude for their contributions, or simply wishing them well, I want every card to reflect my genuine appreciation for them. This is a task that takes some time, but I truly believe it’s worth it.
What makes this effort so rewarding is the response I receive. Routinely, team members reach out to personally thank me for their card and to share how much it meant to them. In a remote work environment, where interactions can sometimes feel transactional, this small gesture helps create a sense of connection, belonging, and human warmth.
As remote work continues to be the norm for many teams, finding meaningful ways to foster connection is crucial. For me, handwritten cards are a personal and impactful way to bridge the physical distance and remind my team that they are more than just names on a screen - they are valued members of a team that cares about them.
